Later in the evening traffic will get lighter and you can take a cab back to Penn Station for about $10.00 - $12.00 but for Wednesday morning just try the E train, you will be fine. If the train doesn't say E train to Jamaica Center - don't board. I promise you, you will not end up in The Bronx. Get off four stops later at Fifth Avenue and follow the people exiting to the street. It will say Queens bound E train - next stop 42nd Street. The E trains are new and they have bright displays. You can buy a MetroCard from the person inside the booth - a live person. Walk toward the E train without going outside. It is a big blue circular emblem on the sign boards overhead. One subway ride from inside Penn Station to Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street. The subway really is the way to go - at least for one journey. Flights are full and everybody that owns a car and only uses it twice a year (Thanksgiving and Christmas) will be on the road. Every Amtrak train to everywhere is sold out. Walk down Fifth past FAO Schwartz to 53rd Street. Take the uptown N, R or W to Fifth Avenue. Begin by walking across 32nd Street from Penn Station to Greeley Square/Sixth Avenue/Broadway. Take the subway or bus from place to place. I would instead get a one day Fun Pass metrocard for you, and the 8-year-old is probably small enough to duck under the turnstile with no problem.
